Beckham comes to MLS' Cubic Zirconia franchise

So the L.A. Galaxy and Major League Soccer pulled out all the bells and whistles to introduce David Beckham, complete with GM Alexi Lalas calling the franchise the "jewel" of MLS.

This one had it all.

- Optimistic view of the league's place in the firmament? Commissioner Don Garber was able to provide that.

- Moronic hyperbole about the Galaxy being a superclub and about how wonderful this would be was lovingly provided by Lalas. Yet he shockingly didn't pull out his standard line "This franchise is the jewel of Major League Soccer, and today that jewel glows a bit brighter." He stopped at jewel. Nice going, Alexi.

- mlsnet.com announcers noted that when Victoria Beckham arrived, "it was like Marilyn Monroe" arrived. Apparently, this was not hyperbole, as the English press' attention in L.A. will more than make up for any anonymity Beckham might enjoy among American soccer fans.

Beckham only made some rudimentary comments, since the "press conference" on the field was more a pep rally, with the mouth-breathers from the L.A. Riot Squad in full voice throughout. They then went into the bowels of Home Depot Center, presumably the working press had the chance to actually, you know, do their frackin' job.

Should be an interesting ride for MLS, but all this hype means that if the Galaxy continues to fall on its face, that would be pretty amusing. Maybe Lalas can continue to have ADD and make a trade every time the team loses.
